Sometimes when you're out at the beach you'll be in a heavily populated beach or an area that has a reputation for theft. In these areas if you can't keep your valuables (keys, jewelry, watches) on you either with a wetsuit or leash cuff pocket, leaving them on the beach or in your car can be a recipe for disaster. Thankfully there are portable lock boxes (key safe) that you can store your valuables in when you're going into the water.
These boxes are usually simple combination locks with a thick metal padlock mechanism that can be attached to the underside of your car to ensure they remain safe and you can easily access is when you return. Note however that sometimes really commited thieves will bring along bolt cutters and tools to help them remove and smash these open (quite difficult). If you're worried about this happening a few good tips are to attach the box in either an area that's in public view at all times ensuring any funny business is quickly picked up on. A good spot is in front/on a lifeguard tower ensuring you talk to at least one of the lifeguards so they know who it belongs to. Another method if surfing in a far off remote location is to attach it to a thick root or tree branch at a random location hidden along the track to the surf. This way the only people who can find it are people who are lost and have somehow wandered off the path (very unlikely to be trying to steal things)
