Surfboards are long wide stiff planks that can be difficult to get into cars that aren't designed for that such as smaller sedans, hatches and coupes. They can also be an issue when you are travelling with passengers and need to have the seats up. Luckily this is where roof racks come to the rescue. Using roof racks can make packing and travelling with a board easy and straight forward every time. It can also make it easier to retrieve your board from inside the car if the car park is tightly packed and you can't open your doors to get your board out. They come in two varieties; soft & hard.
Either option works perfectly fine, it's all a matter of personal preference and budget. I personally prefer soft roof racks whereas Kirra prefers hard racks. Using either method be sure to use any board covers you have to minimize damage to the boards from rocks or anything kicked up by other vehicles. Also when strapping the boards in make them firm and tight, but do not pull has hard as you can as this can sometimes cracked the glass on the board. A simple towel laid flat under the straps can help prevent this damage.
